Managing files and file names

This page applies to Harlequin v13.1r0 and later; and to Harlequin MultiRIP but not Harlequin Core

The name of a file manipulated on a device is an arbitrary string. It can be used in the DEVICETYPE implementation in any reasonable way which acts as a handle or identifier for the collection of data concerned. For example, it could be a database key.

Normally there is no reason for a PSDEV plugin to implement an operating system file, as the RIP provides such devices anyway. Remote file access is also provided through the RIPʹs SOAR architecture in the Harlequin RIP Distributed Edition. However, if the need does arise to use a file name

passed to the operating system as a file name, the limitations of the underlying system, which are generally more restrictive than the PostScript language file name, needs to be taken into account, as discussed in the Harlequin MultiRIP Extensions Manual .
