(v13) Orphaned farm RIPs

This page applies to Harlequin v13.1r0 and later; and to Harlequin Core but not Harlequin MultiRIP

Regrettably it is sometimes possible that the controlling RIP will crash or be killed in such a way that it will not have the opportunity to ask its launched farm RIPs to exit cleanly or have the opportunity to kill them should they not shut down cleanly in a timely fashion. Having orphaned farm RIPs from a previous run causes problems with a new run of the Scalable RIP. Because of this, the Scalable RIP looks for any orphaned farm RIPs that it may have launched from a previous run and by default will kill those processes before launching any new farm RIPs. A warning similar to the following will be produced:

WARNING: At least one orphan farm RIP has been detected; killing them all so new ones can be created.

If this happens frequently something is clearly going wrong and needs to be investigated.
