SmartDFE Upgrade Process

Overview

When upgrading the SmartDFE tools from one release to the next, it is strongly recommended that all SmartDFE applicaitons are updated at the same time and all .sdc files are upgrade to be compatible with the latest release.

Following this process will ensure that the system operates reliably with any new features in the release.

Before starting the process please ensure that all .sdc files and any other files installed outside the .sdc files (for example specialized HarlequinDirect dlls and config files) are backed up.

All licensing information will be retained during the upgrade process, no extra license activations will be used.

Update SmartDFE

SmartDFE is supplied as a suite of applications, .
Files formats and OPC communication between applications may change slightly between releases to deliver new features or improve performance, therefore all applications must all be from the same release.

Uninstall SmartDFE

Uninstall all the SmartDFE components that are installed.

If you have the full SmartDFE suite, these will include:

  • Smart Print Controller

    • Optionally:
Smart Print Controller Meteor UI Plugin

  • Smart Device Configurator

  • Smart Media Manager

If you are running Smart Job Cost Estimator, you may only have one application to uninstall.

Uninstall HarlequinDirect

If the system has HarlequinDirect running on remote servers, this should also be uninstalled

There is no need to uninstall Harlequin on the same PC as Smart Print Controller since the uninstall of Smart Print Controller will also uninstall HarlequinDirect if installed locally.

Install SmartDFE

Install SmartDFE applications from a single release.

Install HarlequinDirect

Install HarlequinDirect on all remote Servers

The is no need to install HarlequinDirect if it is run on the same PC as Smart Print Controller, Smart Print Controller will automatically install a local copy

Update .sdc file

The .sdc file contains the configuration files that control how SmartDFE operates, as well as Smart Media and other files. It is vital that this file contains configuration files that are compatible with the current release.
If old .sdc files are used it is possible that new features or improvements are not available, or the system becomes unstable.

Smart Print Controller uses a Smart Device Template (.sdt) file to preform an upgrade

If you already have a suitable .sdt file you can skip the first step

Create an SDC Template to use for the upgrade

To create a .sdt file, load the required .sdc file into Smart Device Configurator, and click the small triangle next to ‘Save’ and save as a .sdt file.

Clicking ‘Upgrade’ will overwrite files with the latest versions.

Note that only files shown in this panel will be updated, if any new printer specific files have been added these will need to be updated manually.
Check that all files have been updated either automatically or manually.

Note that this process does not update RIP Support files, these must be updated manually.

Once the changes have been made save the sdt file by clicking the small triangle next to ‘Save’ and save as a .sdt file.
