Repairing damaged PDF files

This page applies to Harlequin v13.1r0 and later; and to Harlequin Core but not Harlequin MultiRIP.

When the RIP encounters a PDF document with a bad object offset or other minor problem, it displays a message to that effect and attempt to repair it. It goes about this by scanning the PDF line by line (since all interesting objects are defined as being on their own line, a line-length restriction can safely be applied), noting the positions of every object within the file and scanning the cross-reference table (xref ) section if there is one. If after this scan it has been established that the repaired file is self-consistent, the RIP carries on to output the PDF. The RIP can also repair encrypted PDF files provided, of course, it is supplied with the correct password.
