Failed to start Harlequin Direct

When first installed, Harlequin Direct may not have any configuration files. The lack of config files means that Harlequin Direct exits immediately.

Once the config files are installed (by clicking Apply in the Smart Print Controller), Harlequin Direct starts and remains running.

Failed to connect to Harlequin Direct

Check firewall

Smart Print Controller and Harlequin Direct PC send control data over a socket (even when installed on the same PC).

Windows installations by default have a firewall turned on that can prevent this communication.

If the share is working but Harlequin Direct is not detected by the Smart Print Controller, disable the firewall on the HD PC.

Check IPV4 address

The address and path of the remote PC must be specified in IPV4 style (, not a machine name.

If a machine name has been used, change this to be the IPV4 address and restart the Smart Print Controller.

Change the output folder for TIFF

To modify the write folder for TIFF files, you must modify the Harlequin Direct template configuration file, on the Smart Print Controller PC (see "Harlequin Direct Config").

In the Output section of this file, add the following line before the last line in that section:

"OutputDirectory": "TiffOutput",

This puts all TIFF output in a folder called TiffOutput.  This folder is relative to the Harlequin Direct installation folder on the Harlequin Direct PC, which you must create before you run Smart Print Controller.

Enable SheetCounter

You can enable and disable the SheetCounter feature using a key in the Harlequin Direct template file. You must modify this file on the Smart Print Controller PC; see Harlequin Direct Config.

In the “Output” section of this file, add the following line before the last line in that section:

"SheetCounterEnabled": 1,

Working with Meteor

Hosted Meteor

We recommend that Harlequin Direct hosts the Meteor interface on both Windows and CentOS. Operating in this mode removes the need to start Meteor Print Engine Monitor.

The Meteor software must be installed normally (as defined in the Meteor documentation) to operate in this mode.

To enable Hosted Mode, add a line to the Output section of the ScreenPro Direct configuration file and specify the Meteor configuration file. For example:

"HardwareConfigFile": "ConfigFiles/Meteor_Default.cfg"

You must copy the correct Meteor .dll files into the Harlequin Direct installation folder; the two required files are in the Meteor installation folder:

C:\Program Files\Meteor Inkjet\Meteor\Api\amd64

Copy the following files into the Harlequin Direct installation folder:

  • PrintEngine.dll
  • PrinterInterface.dll

The Meteor config folder is also needed; copy the config folder (C:\Program Files\Meteor Inkjet\Meteor\Config) into the Harlequin Direct folder.

No special action is required.

Log files

When using Hosted mode, the Meteor log file is created in the ConfigFiles folder; the log file is called PrintEngine.Log.

SIM files

The SimFile folder specified as SimFilePath in the Meteor config file must exist.

When outputting to SimFiles, the path to the SimFile folder is relative to the ConfigFiles folder.

If the files do not appear as expected, look in the PrintEngine.Log log file.

Harlequin Direct exits immediately

(Windows only)

The most likely cause of this is that the version of Meteor .dll used by the Print Engine Monitor is missing or different to the .dll used by Harlequin Direct.

Ensure that the PrinterInterface.dll in these two locations are the same:

  • Harlequin Direct installation folder
  • Meteor Print Engine (C:\Program Files\Meteor Inkjet\Meteor\Api\amd64)

Installing UI Plugins

Smart Print Controller has a UI Plugin mechanism that allows you to extend the provided functionality. The following guide uses the Meteor Pane Plugin as an example and assumes you have already installed Smart Print Controller:

  1. Ensure that you have a ZIP file containing the desired plugin: file containing a folder with the plugin files.

2. Check the .zip file's Properties for a Security note under its Attributes; if it's there, set it to "Unblocked", so that you can extract DLLs.

3. Extract the contents of the .zip file into a subdirectory of <Smart Print Controller Installation directory>\UiPlugins

ZIP is extracted into C:\Program Files\Global Graphics\Smart Print Controller\UiPlugins

4. Check that your UiPlugin.dll is stored in the subdirectory. The name of the plugin must end with .UiPlugin.dll

MeteorPanePlugin.UiPlugin.dll is stored within the plugin sub-directory.

5. Start (or re-start) Smart Print Controller.

A new icon should now be visible on the left side of the Smart Print Controller window.
